Can you double Minor with a major at a university?
….It just like double-majoring with a minor, but the other way around.
My folks are pressuring me to major in biology to be a vet (So I have no choice to change their minds from there….no matter how much I have no interest in majoring bio). However I would like to be a retailer/manager with marketing and an actor/costume designer with theater. That is because I am very creative and artistic and would like to have a career where I can use these talents (I can’t really see that in biology, vet., doctor, etc). But since I can’t major in either marketing or theater…. is it possible for me to major in biology AND double minor in marketing and theater? Or would that be much?
You can, but I would not recommend it.
First of all, I would STRONGLY recommend that you speak to your parents about your major. Perhaps your high school guidance counselor can help? If you do not want to be a vet, you should not be wasting four years studying a subject in which you have no interest. You probably won’t do all that well (because you won’t be motivated to put in the work needed – and trust me, bio is not an easy major), and you will be very unhappy to boot. Even if you do want to be a vet, it is not necessary to major in biology – most medical and vet schools do not require students to major in bio or chem, you just need to take the basic courses necessary to pass the MCAT or VCAT. Point out to your parents that forcing you into a major you don’t want is a huge waste of the tuition money that they are forking out each semester.
Now, if you strike out there, I’m still not sure I’d recommend a double minor, particularly in subjects so distant from your major. To minor in a subject, you generally have to take about 5 courses in it, chosen from a specific list. The idea is that these courses will fall into the electives you need for your major, but I doubt that theater courses will be allowed as electives for biology majors. And if you are doing TWO minors in non-cognate areas, you’ll very likely end up having to take more than the standard 120 credits needed to graduate (that’s assuming a semester system, btw).
Good luck!
