Sir Topham Hat Costume
My son is scared of anything in a costume. Help!?
My son is scared of anything in a costumer. Chuck E Cheese. The guy that dresses as a dog at petsmart, sir topham hat at a day with thomas. He screams and clings to me when I pick him up. I have tried to walk up to the man, dog, mouse ect to show him it’s not scary but it’s no good. This has ruined many family outings because he won’t even look at the costume. He is fine on halloween, i guess because everyone is wearing a costume. How do I get him to open up and have fun with it?

Reassure him. Pick him up.
His fear is REAL. Do not get angry at him, do not trivialise it.
Avoid anything in costume for a little while, why does every outing need a costumed person anyway!
Maybe pretend you are a bit scared too and you need HIS hand to hold yours so you feel better because he (big boy) is protecting you. Hope it makes him feel slightly larger than his fear.
I said to my daughter (3 at the time) that if i saw that robot in the mall again (awful big robot with awful resonating voice totally scary!) , I would politely tell the robot to NOT scare my little girl anymore and to say sorry to her. Then I would say to my 3 yr old ‘would you feel better if the robot says sorry for scaring you because he probably does not know he scares little girls!’ and we would talk about the robot flying away to robot land in his robot plane to his robot wife and robot dog. That he would not come to the mall again because he needed to go back to his robot world to do other stuff.
Anyway. After weeks of robot stuff I got so tired of it, that I sort of stopped talking about it and so did she. But we had fun playing and pretending and letting our imaginagion run wild.
She is now not scared of robots any more.
