Ladies Costume Jewellery
Was it common decades ago for people to shower young guests with little goodies to take home?
I remember visiting a few people my parents age or older. Spend the afternoon. The ladies would open up their drawer or other little things in boxes throughout the house and offer us a necklace or handkerchief. Came home with a collection of costume jewelry, little what-nots, toys and such things. Most kids in my area didn’t have a lot of things back then and it tickled them pink to do that and we had some new stuff. (we never asked or hinted for anything it was spontaneous, maybe a way to find a new owner for some things they didn’t use). Was this common or just a local thing?
Dee W.: I was thinking it is because kids have way too much stuff or else they don’t appreciate it when something is offered to them. I always thought it was a sweet gesture for them to share what they had with us. Maybe part of it is that there are so many yard sales that if someone wants to buy stuff or get rid of it they save it up for a big sale.
Yes, I remember that. I guess I’m the same – when my granddaughters come to visit I let them go through my jewelry and such – I put away items I cherish first, they’ll get those later.
