Iron Man 2 Review: You Might Have to Be Iron Man to Play It
A demo of a video game should highlight the most exciting and innovative aspects of a game – which the demo we played did. Little did we know, however, that we should have stopped there. In fact, the demo for Iron Man 2 was probably the best demo we every played as it accurately depicted the only things that you would do in the game – good for the demo, bad for the game. Worse yet, the game is too short. You can get from start to finish in about 5 hours, just a bit over an afternoon. If you would like to spend around $12.00 an hour for some mediocre entertainment, Iron Man 2 could be the game for you. However, you might have more fun spending $20.00 on an Iron Man costume and running around your neighborhood, perplexing your neighbors.
Platform: Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, DS, Wii
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Action
ESRB Rating: Teen
Release Date: 05/04/2010
Graphics: 5.0 / 10.0
Many of the graphical aspects of Iron Man 2 come off very nice on Tony Stark and War Machine – their suits get scratched over time and there are some cool explosions. However, this is where the graphical achievements end. Many of the faces of normal characters are unintentionally hilarious and much of the graphics are muddy and un-textured.
Game Play: 6.0 / 10.0
If you can manage to take off properly (the controls switch – frustrating, it is), flying around and blowing stuff up can be relatively satisfying – until you realize that the game is little more than causing explosions and flying to checkpoints. You never really feel like an unstoppable Iron Man. In fact, it is reminiscent of Superman 64 (Commodore 64 version not the pathetic Nintendo 64 version). The real problem is that there is no real challenge. Use force and you will succeed.
Story: 3.0 / 10.0
You might sometimes skip this section of a review to avoid spoilers. However, fear not because there will be no spoilers here. Unfortunately, this is mostly because there is pretty limited story included in Iron Man 2. Some bad guys steal a copy of your virtual butler in order to develop a brand new weapon. You need to stop them. Fly – explode them. That’s about it.
Music: 6.0 / 10.0
The music is decent and contributes to the game. However, the real treat is the voice acting of Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle. However terrible they may look in the game, it is nice to see that SEGA dropped a little cash to get some authentic voices in the game. Otherwise, the music and sound is a little unremarkable.
Replay Value: 4.0 / 10.0
You can go back through the game and play levels as either Iron Man or War Machine. However, you probably won’t want to. The RPG aspects of the game are easy to forget because you can complete the game in the same general upgrade level that you start with. The game isn’t hard at all to begin with and there is really no reason to revisit this game a second time.
Overall Rating: 5.0 / 10.0
It’s pretty simple to rate this game. It can fill up a Saturday afternoon if you have some time to kill but want to go see a movie by 7:00. However, it probably won’t be long before this game is delegated to the bargain bin and you won’t have any problem finding used copies. Die hard Iron Man fans might give the game a try (it’s miles above the original Iron Man game) but real gamers will notice the game’s flaws from start to finish.
