Costume Pearl Beads

What should I use to clean some old costume “pearl” jewelery?
I’ve been working on sorting through a big old box of loose beads mostly broken bits of old costume jewelery over the last couple evenings, and I’ve found a couple rather nice strings of old glass “pearls.” The problem is that they’re absolutly filthy. I want to get them cleaned up so I can really get a good look at them, but I don’t want to inadvertantly destroy them by trying to clean them with the wrong thing. What should I use for this? (Nothing ammonia-based, please. The smell makes me feel ill.) Thanks!
I use baking soda and water to clean my costume jewelry.
Make a paste, and then use a very soft toothbrush to apply the paste. Rinse with cold water and dry with a soft cloth.
