Costume Fat Padding

How could you make a good Edna Turnblad costume?
For Halloween I want to be John Travolta as Edna Turnblad. I don’t want a store bought costume, I want to just go to a cheap clothing store or something and buy stuff.
But what kind of top, dress, and shoes should I buy so thhat I’d instantly be recognized as Edna?
Where could I buy a decent 60′s wig as well? I don’t plan on ratting my hair lol!
And how can I make myself fat without looking like I stuffed a pillow down my shirt? In other words, where can I pad myself so the fat will look more natural? and is there a way to make my face look fat?
How could I make my legs chunky as well?
Are there certain accessories that’d correspond well?
And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but what makeup would work well? THERE! I SAID IT!
THANK YOU for any help! I can’t wait to hear your ideas!

Hmmm…thats a bit of a tough one…
Go to some thrift shops like Goodwill or Salvation Army. Find large sized maybe floral or flannel dress. Or maybe even sequins. Also look for old solid colored heels or mary jane type shoes. Maybe find a sweater/cardigan that sort of cordinates with the dress. Just remember older looking and fabulous lol
Do you have a costume shop near you at all? Where I live we have 3. Nick Nackery, Party City and Cow Halloween. They have a pretty huge selection of wigs and I’ve seen some nice big puffy ones that would work well. Even some with the head band. Walmart and K-Mart also carry wigs. You could look there as well. And sometimes I see wigs at thrift stores. Be sure to soak it in the tub with some shampoo/soap before wearing.

I looked on there for you and couldnt really find any…they have a much larger selection in the actual store though. Theres a find a store feature on there too. So you can lood for one close to you

I did find that one on another site. And I’ve seen similar in stores.
I’m not sure about making you look fat. Ummm…of course you’ll need a rather large bra and stuff that with maybe cotton or something. Hmm…I dunno I’m thinking like buy a spandex or some other body suit and fill it with fluff. Make like your own fat suit. I’m sure all that cotton would get expensive. You could probably buy old pillows from thrift shops for cheap and tear them apart. Buy natural colored tights and fill those with cotton as well to make your legs look chunkier.
I’m not sure how to make your face look fat. I haven’t gotten that far in my SFX make up studies. I know that back in the 70′s when Marlon Brando was thinner and filmed The Godfather they stuffed his cheeks with cotton but that also messed up his speach. There’s also a lot of shading involved and prosthetics, which actually if you look in those halloween stores you might find a prosthetic double chin or something or other. They’re easy to do. You use the glue and glue it on and then use foundation to make it match with your skin. I’m sorry I can’t help you anymore with this. :/
Hmm accessories…pearls maybe. Or maybe even glasses on those little neck straps. I think I remember Edna wearing those.
I guess I didn’t pay much attention to Edna’s make up. I remember it being kind of natural/simple looking. I say buy you some powder foundation, pink blush, brown eye liner, brown eye shadow (mainly for eyebrows use the brush and go over your brows with it) And red/pink lipstick. Don’t use too much or you’ll look like Divine (the original Edna from the original Hairspray)
Also get your nails done…well that expensive so maybe buy the fakes from a store and have your mom/girlfriend/whatever give you a mani. Use pink or red nail polish.
I hope I helped…even though I don’t really think I helped much. At least I threw some input out there. Your question was all alone with no replies.
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll look awesome!
